Kauko K. Makinen, DDS


A native of Finland, Professor Makinen received his B.A. degree in 1964 his M.S. degree in biochemistry in 1964, and his Licentiate in Philosophy (biochemistry) in 1966 from the University of Turku in Turku, Finland, and his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry in 1969 from the University of Helsinki in Helsinki, Finland. He was appointed instructor in anatomy at the University of Oulu in Oulu, Finland, in 1964. He served as teacher in microbiological chemistry at the Turku Trade School and chemist at the University of Turku Dental School in 1965. Professor Makinen was a senior lecturer in enzymology at the University of Helsinki and an associate professor of dental biochemistry at the University of Turku in 1970. He also served as a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Dental Research in Bethesda, Maryland from 1975 to 1976, a senior research fellow at the Academy of Finland in 1979, and a visiting professor of biochemistry and biophysics at Texas A&M University from 1979 to 1980. Professor Makinen joined the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry as a visiting professor in 1984 and was promoted to professor with tenure in 1986.

He is a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon honor society, the Biochemical Society of London, the American Institute of Nutrition, and the New York Academy of Science. Professor Makinen has served as a member or held office in a number of professional societies, including the Organization for European Caries Research, the International Association for Dental Research, the Finnish Dental Society, the European Research Group for Oral Biology, and the Federation Dentaire International.

Professor Makinen has contributed to the scientific literature through professional journals, as well as through chapters in several textbooks. For over 20 years, his major research focus has been on the effect of xylitol (a sugar alcohol) on dental caries.  Kauko K. Catherine Hayes, D.M.D., S.M., D.M.Sc.


Dr. Hayes was born in Boston and received her B.S. in Biology from Boston College in 1983 and her D.M.D. from Tufts University in 1987. She completed a General Practice Residency at Brigham and Women's Hospital in 1988 and received both Master's (1989) and Doctoral (1993) degrees in Epidemiology from Harvard University. Dr. Hayes is a diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and is currently a director on the same board. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Oral Health Policy and Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. She is a faculty member in the Oral Epidemiology training program and mentors Master's and Doctoral students in epidemiology.

Dr. Hayes teaches research design and biostatistics to HSDM students and also directs the pre doctoral research program. She has held leadership positions in national and international organizations and has published numerous articles and book chapters in the field of dental public health and epidemiology. Her primary research interests include the epidemiology of craniofacial anomalies and health services research in dentistry. She is currently a Core Epidemiologist for the Center for Research to Evaluate and Eliminate Dental Disparities(CREEDD) and is Principal Investigator of a study within the center entitled: The Effect of Severe Early Childhood Caries (ECC) on growth in young children.

Dr. Jonathan V. Wright, M.D.

Dr. Jonathan Wright is the Medical Director of Tahoma Clinic in Renton, Washington, where he also practices medicine. A Harvard University (A.B. 1965) and University of Michigan graduate (M.D. 1969), Dr. Wright has taught natural biochemical medical treatments since 1983 to thousands of physicians in the USA, Europe, and Japan. In 1982, Dr. Wright personally developed the use of bio-identical estrogens, and was the first to use DHEA in private practice.
